About this book
The Life, Studies, and Works of Benjamin West, Esq., President of the Royal Academy of London, is by John Galt and is composed from materials furnished by himself. The preface says the professional life of Mr. West constitutes an important part of an historical work. The text says that when the American Poets celebrate the golden age of their country in future times, they will draw their descriptions from the authentic history of Pennsylvania in the reign of King George the Second.
The text says that Mr. West sent three pictures to the first exhibition after his arrival in England, and that the approbation these works obtained induced the association to elect him one of the directors. A list of pictures in the text names, among others, Chryses on the Sea-shore, the Choice of Hercules, and Daniel interpreting the Hand-writing on the Wall.
