About this book

Free as in Freedom, subtitled Richard Stallman's Crusade for Free Software, is a book by Sam Williams. The table of contents names chapters such as For Want of a Printer, A Portrait of the Hacker as a Young Man and The Emacs Commune, among others. The text says that in 1979 Reid made the decision to sell Scribe to a Pittsburgh-area software company called Unilogic. The text says the deal was a win-win for Reid and, for Stallman, a betrayal of the programmer ethos, pure and simple.

The text says Stallman drafted a few of his colleagues and formed the Free Software Foundation (FSF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to speeding the GNU Project towards its goal. A note on terms says the writer has opted for the more politically laden “free software” term when describing software programs that come with freely copyable and freely modifiable source code.
