Aeroplane construction is a book by Sydney Camm. A chapter headed "Details of Plane Construction" says that the tendency to lose lift, pronounced in some machines, hardly noticeable in others, may be directly traced and attributed to the manner in which the wings are built. The text says there seems no valid reason for the continued use of wood as the material for the construction of such items as the fin, rudder, and elevators.
The text names the Gnome, Le Rhone, and Clerget as rotary engines of note, all of which are necessarily air-cooled. A heading reads "Essential Requirements of an Engine Mounting," and the text gives the essential features of any mounting as absolute rigidity and accessibility, with a moderately low weight. The text says that although gluing is a most necessary operation in modern wing construction, it is not what one would call an engineering proposition.
