About this book

Political freedom and moral responsibility meet in these writings and speeches from India's struggle under British rule. Mahatma Gandhi considers self-government, the Khilafat movement, relations between Hindus and Muslims, and the treatment of communities burdened by social exclusion. The collection's headings reveal a wide field of concern, from events in the Punjab to the position of Indians living abroad.

The passages on non-co-operation bring the debate down to practical choices. Gandhi answers objections about public pressure, the danger of violence, and the support owed to people who leave their employment. He distinguishes peaceful withdrawal from conduct driven by anger or revenge. Published in this edition in 1922, the collection offers readers arguments made amid political conflict, with attention to the discipline and mutual support Gandhi thought collective action required.
