About this book
French collectors use the term Ex-libris for manuscript ownership entries as well as the objects the discussion distinguishes as book-plates. The discussion identifies the supposed ex-libris of François Rabelais and Charlotte Corday as autographs written in books that once belonged to them. The account also describes a ruling that extends the term to armorial bearings, monograms and devices stamped on leather bindings, as well as allowing autographs and other manuscript entries.
The reproduced examples include old armorials, typographical ownership labels and book-stamps, alongside descriptions of ex-libris found in books. The bibliography lists principal works referring to French ex-libris in chronological order.
