About this book
Fragments of statues, inscribed bases and ancient descriptions provide the clues for Walter Woodburn Hyde's study of monuments honoring Olympic winners. Published in 1921, the book asks how these lost works looked, where they stood and how sculptors represented athletic achievement. Hyde compares the accounts of Pausanias and Pliny with surviving stone and metal remains, Roman copies, small bronzes and images on pottery, coins and other objects.
Separate discussions examine athletes at rest and in motion, winners of horse and chariot races, and the placement of monuments at Olympia and beyond. The detailed entries connect named competitors with sculptors, inscriptions and reports of statues in different cities. Hyde also makes the limits of his reconstructions clear, treating proposed identifications as tentative. Readers interested in ancient sport or the methods of art history can follow how scattered pieces of evidence support an argument.
