About this book
This short history of English literature keeps to belles lettres. Its preface says philosophy, history and science get only passing mention, and that the author leaves out the Anglo-Saxon period and the vernacular literature of the Scots before the time of Burns.
In one passage the author describes early English poems, among them The Owl and the Nightingale, a dispute in which the two birds stand for opposite views of life, and The Land of Cokaygne, an amusing poem of about two hundred lines set in a land of roasted geese and pastry walls. Another passage turns to Macpherson's Ossian poems of 1762 and Chatterton's forgeries, noting the controversy over whether the Gaelic originals existed. Quoted verse includes lines that begin "Heard melodies are sweet."
