The preface describes the materials for a life of Willis as abundant, with most of his writings autobiographical to a greater or lesser degree. The preface suggests that passages from those writings could form a life when placed in order and connected by paragraphs of facts.
The account places the beginning of Willis’s school life under the Rev. Dr. McFarland in Concord, New Hampshire. A school recollection contrasts the forgotten faces of teacher and playmates with remembered rocks, river eddies, meadow trees and bends in the current. The account says that Willis was later brought home and sent to the Boston Latin School, which was then under Ben Gould.
