About this book
From Immigrant to Inventor is a book by Michael Pupin. A chapter is headed The End of the Apprenticeship as Greenhorn. The text says that for a peasant boy from a Serb village who a little over two years previously was wearing a peasant’s sheepskin coat and cap, to become a fellow student of those youths who looked like young aristocrats seemed impossible.
The narrator says Bilharz would be imitating sounds of all kinds of birds and bugs in another part of the building, after he had grown tired of reciting Greek and Latin poetry and singing ecclesiastical songs. One of the bigger fellows walks up to the narrator and knocks the fez off his head, and the narrator punches him on the nose and then they clinch. The text says the National Academy of Sciences was chartered by Congress in 1863.
