About this book
Memoirs of Robert-Houdin, Ambassador, Author and Conjurer is credited to Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin. A chapter heading lists, among others, A Country Idler, Dr. Carlosbach, Conjurer and Professor of Mystification, and The Sand-bag and the Stirrup Trick. The narrator says the reader will know how a magician is produced and will learn that the tree whence his magic staff was cut was only that of persevering labor.
A performance by Philippe has a first part composed of very average tricks, relieved by the manœuvres of some curious automata. One automaton, the Cossack, should have been called the Grimacer, so quaint were the contortions in which it indulged. The narrator says he will adhere to his expressed intention of only alluding to events connected with his professional life.
