About this book
From Manassas to Appomattox: Memoirs of the Civil War in America is by James Longstreet, Lieutenant-General, Confederate Army, and is illustrated with plates, maps, portraits and engravings. It is dedicated to the officers and soldiers of the First Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. The preface says that after the surrender General Lee undertook to write of the campaigns of that army.
The text includes a passage from the war with Mexico, in which General Taylor and Mexican troops are named and Fort Brown is mentioned. It also includes lists of regiments and their commanders arranged by division and corps, among them Jackson's Corps and Ewell's Division. In another passage, about the Confederate Congress, a compromise would have Congress provide for a supreme commander of the Confederate armies and the President call General Lee to that office.
