About this book

Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, published in 2006, is a graphic memoir by the American cartoonist Alison Bechdel, who also draws the comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For. It looks back on her childhood and youth in rural Pennsylvania and on her complicated relationship with her father, who taught English and ran the town's funeral home, which the children called the fun home.

Bechdel uses drawings, diary pages and literary references to explore family secrets, gender roles, sexual orientation and the gap between what a family shows and what it hides. The book was adapted into a musical that won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2015.

Fun Home tells, in comics, the story of Bechdel's father, a small-town funeral director and English teacher who restored a Gothic Revival house with something close to mania and who was, like his daughter, gay, though he never said so aloud.
