About this book

Spring flowers accompany Gabriel Viaud on his daily walk from a thatched cottage to St. Martin's Abbey in Normandy. The peasant boy earns a little money preparing parchment and grinding colours for the monks who make decorated books. A new assignment places him beside Brother Stephen, a gifted painter whose love of his craft is troubled by the restrictions of abbey life.

Evaleen Stein's historical story for children follows the making of an hour book intended as a royal bridal gift for Lady Anne of Bretagne. Painted pages, a velvet cover and jeweled clasps make the object tangible, while Gabriel's family's difficulties give him a private reason to care about its destination. The contrast between a costly commission and a child's modest hopes supplies the story's tension. Readers can find an accessible introduction to manuscript decoration alongside a tale about artistic ambition, kindness and the wish to be heard by someone able to help.
