About this book
Gilbert thinks his horse gives him an advantage on the road to market, until an old shepherd reaches town ahead of him. Curious about the stranger's secret, the young peasant trades away both his horse and the morning's earnings. In return, he learns how a stem of ragwort can carry him through the air to Elf-land when the moon is full.
Clara de Chatelain's fairy tale follows Gilbert into a country of uncertain appearances. A lady beside a hilltop castle gives him an ivory fiddle with golden strings and asks him to tend her flock. The sheep scatter, the instrument resists his efforts, and the reward he imagines keeps him chasing an increasingly puzzling task. His impatient bargain and confused attempts at shepherding give the magic a comic edge. For readers of children's fairy tales, the story offers a pointed look at curiosity, wishful thinking and the trouble caused by trusting appearances.
