About this book

A town that has fallen into a rut gives Ernest Vincent Wright a setting for his argument that young people deserve a practical voice in community life. Published in 1939, Gadsby combines a small-town novel with an unusual writing constraint: its story avoids the letter E. Wright's introduction explains how that rule shapes everything from pronouns and verb endings to numbers, and describes tying down a typewriter key to enforce it.

The opening challenges adults who dismiss children's questions and abilities, linking curiosity, education and play to the health of a growing community. In a later scene, Mayor Gadsby and Doctor Wilkins confront harmful drinking among local youths, and public anger fills a courtroom. Civic pride and responsibility run alongside the book's experiment with language.
