About this book

General Bramble is by André Maurois, translated by Jules Castier and Ronald Boswell, and first published in 1921. The contents list names, among others, Portraits, Diplomacy, The Tower of Babel, and Love and the Infant Dundas. The text says that portraits of some of the finest types in the Division met with various verdicts, and that each model thought his own rotten and the others excellent.

The only unqualified praise came from the sergeant-major who acted as chief clerk to General Bramble. A speaker says that when you have accepted the King's shillin' you've got to put up with lots o' things, but Church P'rade's the very limit. A writer says he is observing the bucolic mind and notices with some anxiety that the brain of the countryman is very much like the turnip he grows with such perseverance.
