About this book
General Science is by Bertha M. Clark, Ph.D. The preface says the book is not intended to prepare for college entrance examinations, but that it should prepare the thoughtful reader to meet wisely and actively some of life's important problems. The preface hopes the book will show the vital importance of the conservation of human strength and health.
The text explains the principle of hot-water heating with a simple experiment using two flasks and two tubes, as in Figure 15. The text states that air has weight, and that 1 cubic foot of air at atmospheric pressure weighs 1-1/4 ounces, while the air around us presses with a force of about 15 pounds upon every square inch of surface that it touches. The text says a small dynamo, such as is used for lighting fifty incandescent lamps, has a horse power of about 33.5.
