About this book
The volume is titled German Culture Past and Present. The contents list, among others, gives chapters called The Reformation Movement, Popular Literature of the Time and The Folklore of Reformation Germany. The text says the trade-guilds had also attained to a separate power of their own, and were in some cases ousting the burgher-aristocracy. According to the text, the patricians lorded it alike over the townspeople and over the neighbouring peasantry, who were subject to the municipality.
The text says the capture of Constantinople by the Turks in 1453 had struck a heavy blow at the commerce of the Bavarian cities which had come by way of Constantinople and Venice. The text says Germany had a rich popular literature during the Middle Ages, and that prominent among it were the love-songs of the Minnesingers.
