About this book

The preface says the present is the best collected edition of the important works of Schiller which is accessible to readers in the English language. The preface says Schiller was not less efficiently qualified by nature for an historian than for a dramatist. The history's author says the longer the reader delays on the introduction, the more familiar he becomes with the actors in this history and the scene in which they took a part. The author names, among others, de Thou, Strada, Reyd and Grotius as guides for this first volume.

The history says Luther had written against the invocation of saints, and that every audacious varlet who broke into the churches and cloisters, and plundered the altars, called himself Lutheran. The text has a speaker conclude that, should unexpected obstacles oppose his return, he would send in his place his son, Prince Charles, who should reside in Brussels.

Friedrich Schiller

Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) was a German poet, playwright, and historian, and with Goethe a founder of Weimar classicism. His dramas of freedom and moral struggle, and his Ode to Joy set to music by Beethoven, made him one of the most beloved writers in the German language.
