About this book
Edward Hutton's study of Giovanni Boccaccio takes up the uncertainties about his origins. The text notes that Boccaccio calls himself of Certaldo but probably was not born there, and that many Italian scholars hold he was born in Paris of a French mother, which it says cannot be asserted as a fact. It weighs the evidence, whose corner-stone is Boccaccio's statement to Petrarch that he was born in 1313.
His father, Boccaccino, was a Florentine banker and money-changer. The book gives dates from his career: in business in Florence in 1318, one of the five Consiglieri in 1326, in Naples for the Societa de' Bardi in 1327, and in Paris in 1332. Other pages discuss a Jubilee year proclaimed by the Pope, when the commune of Florence asked to cut the fifteen days required in Rome to eight. One illustration shows the story of Griselda (Decameron X, 10).
