About this book

Give Me Liberty is by Thomas Jefferson Wertenbaker. It deals with the view that no power had the right to take a man's property without his own consent, with the Virginia Assembly of 1619 as an early example. It quotes the New York Assembly telling Governor Robert Hunter that its right to dispose of the money of the freemen came from the free choice of the people, and the Virginia House of Burgesses declaring that subjects cannot be deprived of property but by their own consent.

The text also discusses disputes between governors and Burgesses over who should receive revenues and decide how they were used. One passage describes a governor's hostility toward Mr. Wallace and then Nicholson's love affair with Lucy Burwell, whose father, Major Lewis Burwell, lived at Carter's Creek in Gloucester County. A list of works on Virginia history is also included.
