About this book

How Justice Grew, Virginia Counties, An Abstract of Their Formation, is by Martha W. Hiden. The opening says the Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery carried, in addition to their human cargo, the poultry and fruit acquired in the West Indies, the clothing, household gear, and other possessions of the passengers, and also had a large though imponderable cargo of English laws, customs and religion. The text says the colonists had left England, neither driven out nor seeking escape, but to found a new England in a new world.

The text says Charles River County presumably took its name from Charles I, who was King when it was formed. The text lists a Warwick River County, calls it the only original shire from which no other county was formed, and says the name was changed to Warwick County in 1643. The text says three counties were also formed in 1793, and that one of these, Grayson, was taken from Wythe. An index lists, among others, Morgan county, Joshua Morris, Archibald Morriss and Mount Vernon.
