About this book
James Fenimore Cooper's Gleanings in Europe is a work in two volumes headed England, by an American. Letter VI, addressed to Mrs. J, says that one judging from the invitations on his table during the season would be very apt to pronounce London an eating and drinking town, but adds that inferences are not to be rashly drawn. The writer reports breakfasting with Mr. Rogers, who had invited five or six others, being punctual to the hour, and finding that not another soul had come.
The writer says Lord Salisbury appeared to have a knowledge of his subject, which, in itself, was scarcely worthy to occupy the time of the peers of Great Britain. The writer says a Frenchman will often talk an hour without a true argument or a false quantity. The writer says that on the continent of Europe, nobility has long formed a strictly social caste.
