About this book
Paris as It Was and as It Is is by Francis William Blagdon. The title page calls the book a sketch of the French capital, illustrative of the effects of the Revolution, with respect to sciences, literature, arts, religion, education, manners, and amusements. The title page adds that the book is in a series of letters written by an English traveller during the years 1801-2, to a friend in London.
The writer names the authors from whom the writer has chiefly borrowed as St. Foix, Mercier, Dulaure, Pujoulx, and Biot. The text says three of the first master-printers in Paris certified the intelligence and skill of the blind pupils. The text says that on entering the residence of a parvenu you would fancy yourself suddenly transported into the house of a wealthy Athenian, and that mahogany is the wood employed for making these modern articles of furniture.
