About this book
Great Musical Composers: German, French, and Italian is by George T. Ferris, edited with an introduction by Mrs. William Sharp. The contents list includes, among others, chapters on Schubert and Schumann, Piccini, Paisiello, and Cimarosa, Cherubini and his Predecessors, and Méhul, Spontini, and Halévy. The introduction says the following biographical sketches were originally published in America by Mr. George T. Ferris in two volumes, one of them entitled The Great German Composers.
The text says that public competitions were still in vogue in Bach's time, that one of these was held by Augustus II., Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, and that Bach's principal rival was a French virtuoso, Marchand, an exile from Paris. The text says that Dominic Cimarosa was born in Naples in 1749 and that his mother, a humble washerwoman, could do little for her fatherless child, but an observant priest saw the promise of the lad.
