About this book
Greece and Babylon presents a comparative sketch of Mesopotamian, Anatolian and Hellenic religions, as the title page describes its subject. The discussion argues that proto-Hellenic tribes had developed the cult of certain personal deities before the conquest of Greece, with some, at least, shared by several tribes. The text considers it quite possible that the proto-Hellenic tribes found such divinities among their Aryan kinsfolk of Thrace before crossing the northern frontier of Greece.
The discussion says that Marduk of Babylon may once have been a sun-god but transcended his elemental nature. The ritualistic value of purity is described as probably a postulate of early Hellas’s religious feeling, though Homer offers only faint glimpses of the idea.
