About this book
The preface says the Mysteries were once the only vehicle of religion throughout the world and preserved forms, ceremonies, rites and practices through periodical celebrations. The discussion says influence on Christianity is hard to know and still debated, and reports a claim that the Mysteries lived again in Church ritual.
The account of games mentions sacrifices to Demeter and Persephone and lists athletic and musical contests, a horse race and an Ancestral or Hereditary Contest. The Ancestral or Hereditary Contest is said to be of unknown nature, though a possible origin is suggested in competition between reapers on the sacred Rharian plain. The discussion says an Egyptian source has been attributed to the Mysteries of Greece but stresses that the evidence is slight and such influences difficult to trace.
