About this book
Greece and the Ægean Islands is a book by Philip Sanford Marden. The text mentions the great marble quarries from which came the stone for the Acropolis temples. The text says the ancient quarries lie far up on the side of the slope and that the marks of the old chisels are still plainly to be discerned.
Sunium is described as a famous promontory at the extremity of the Attic peninsula, and the text says that as the trains are slow and infrequent it is better, if one can, to go down by sea. The narrator says they dropped anchor at the promontory of Cnidos in mid-afternoon, in one of the double bays for which the ancient naval station was famous. The visitor is told of a damp and dripping cave where once was an important shrine of Asklepios, with the usual sacred spring still flowing.
