About this book
The narrator disclaims heroic adventures, saying that the journey involved neither attendance at a duel nor any tragic encounter with brigands or smugglers. The narrator describes much walking and a little conversation, presenting the account as a record of the pleasures received through sight and hearing. The narrator distinguishes the publicly known Marcelin, a critic and observer of worldly elegance, from a learned and thoughtful Marcelin known to only a few people.
The narrator says he has come down to Royan before going to Bayonne, with ships carrying white sails ascending slowly on both sides of the boat. The approach to Lourdes brings bare hills and a landscape described as sad, with dull, lead-colored roofs gathered below the highway. A mountain above Luchon bears the name Super-Bagnères, and the narrator encounters the Fountain of Love at the outset.
