About this book
Greek dress is a study of the costumes worn in ancient Greece, from pre-Hellenic times to the Hellenistic age, by Ethel Beatrice Abrahams. The section on materials and ornamentation says the commonest materials were naturally woollen, but linen and silk were used for more luxurious garments. Fragments actually found in a tomb at Kertch in the Crimea are given as proof that the woollen materials used varied considerably in texture.
A sarcophagus cover from Kertch has ornamentation divided into bands, consisting of battle scenes with chariots, and birds and beasts scattered about the field of the design. The designs on the sarcophagus cover are not embroidered, nor produced in the course of weaving the cloth, but are apparently drawn out by means of some pigment applied after the material was woven. The ornamental patterns which adorn the chiton include borders at the feet and at the edge of the overfold.
