About this book
The Arts and Crafts of Ancient Egypt is a book by W. M. Flinders Petrie. The preface calls the book a handbook intended to aid in the understanding of Egyptian art, with the illustrations and descriptions selected for that purpose only. The preface says the history of the art would require a far greater range of examples, in order to illustrate the growth and decay of each of the great periods.
The book says that in the Old Kingdom small amulets of carnelian or ivory were usual, in forms such as the hand, the fist, and the eye, among others. The book says that in the Middle Kingdom the more usual material was silver or electrum, and that the New Kingdom used amulets but little. The book says beads were used from prehistoric times, and names quartz, amethyst, and agate, among other hard stones that were cut then.
