About this book

The title page presents a popular guide to using the telescope for amusement and instruction, accompanied by illustrations on stone and wood. The discussion of telescope structure says that even a small instrument can provide profitable amusement for people who know how to apply its powers. The author recalls observers expressing surprise at what a well-steadied opera-glass could reveal when directed toward certain parts of the heavens.

The account of γ Leonis places the double star above Regulus and describes the colours of its components as yellow-orange and greenish-yellow. The discussion of ι Leonis calls the star a fairly severe test for the observer's telescope because its components are close together. The observing instructions explain that adjusting a screen can make the distance between projected graduations correspond to a desired unit of linear measurement.
