About this book

Hampshire Days is by W. H. Hudson and is inscribed to Sir Edward and Lady Grey, Northumbrians with Hampshire written in their hearts. The contents entry for Chapter I lists topics including, among others, Autumn in the New Forest, Red colour in mammals, A house by the Boldre and Voles and mice. In a section called Hornet and bank-vole, the narrator sits in the shade of a large elm tree at the riverside, a few hundred yards from the house, when a big hornet visits.

The hornet, quite four inches apart from the vole at the upper end of the cleft, stops eating, regards the intruder for some time, then advances towards him in a threatening attitude. The text describes a pair in which he moves round her, passing by means of the threads he keeps throwing out from spray to spray, while she moves round on her flower to keep him in sight. The text says that occasionally, when a wren peeped in from the clustering ivy or hopped on to a window-sill and saw us inside, he would scold us for being there with that sharp, angry little note of his.
