About this book
Locusts and Wild Honey is a book by John Burroughs. The contents list names, among others, The Pastoral Bees, Sharp Eyes, Strawberries, Is It Going to Rain? and Speckled Trout. In the preface the writer says that for the most part the title of his book is an allegory rather than an actual description.
The text says the post-road, as the new St. John’s road is also called, begins twenty miles from Quebec at Stoneham, the farthest settlement. The text quotes a remark made to Eckermann comparing the earth and her atmosphere to a great living being perpetually inhaling and exhaling. The party sits resting on a bridge, their packs still weighing fifteen or twenty pounds each, as two women pass with pails on their arms, going for blackberries.
