About this book

Three friends face the end of college with very different plans in Jane Abbott's story of friendship and family life. Two of them share the name Anne Leavitt, though the smaller, livelier one is known as Nancy. While her serious friend prepares to teach children in Siberia, Nancy brings a restless upbringing and an independent spirit to the next stage of her life.

At Happy House, Nancy encounters Aunt Sabrina and the weight of Leavitt family traditions. Writing to her friend Claire, she describes fragrant summer nights, island customs and her own habit of speaking too quickly. Her challenge to Sabrina's pride gradually gives way to a more thoughtful interest in the past. Set among the Hero Islands of the Champlain Valley, this novel for younger readers pairs lively conversation with questions about inherited loyalties, personal honesty and what it means to make other people happy.
