About this book

Two children from a travelling circus arrive in a quiet village to live with their reluctant Aunt Hetty. Pearl remembers the people who cared for them with affection, while her older brother Periwinkle longs for a settled home and schooling. Their aunt views their upbringing with suspicion, but their frank talk begins to reach her. Anna Graetz's children's novel brings these different ideas of family, respectability and kindness into the same household.

The family tensions extend beyond the children's arrival. A mortgage inherited from their mother gives Aunt Hetty power over a widow's home, and she argues that the money will help pay for Pearl's musical training and Periwinkle's education. Periwinkle challenges that reasoning when he learns what collecting it could mean for another family. The story offers readers a small village drama in which a child's sense of fairness tests the adults' claims of duty.
