About this book
Happy: the Life of a Bee is a work by Walter Flavius McCaleb, with illustrations and decorations by Clement B. Davis. The foreword says that its writer, banished years ago into the far Rio Grande region, became a keeper of bees, having loved them as a child. The contents list names chapters called, among others, The Awakening, The Cell-house and The First Flight.
The narrator, a bee, says that one bee drew his tongue across the narrator's face, and that this is the customary salutation to all newly-born bees. The narrator finds a crystal drop of gum on a mesquite-tree and fills the basket-legs with it, and the old director calls the narrator a clever fellow. A bee named Crip tells the narrator, as they stand by the cage and listen to the regal call of the Queen, that he shall fight the first bee that comes near her.
