About this book

Harper's Electricity Book for Boys is written and illustrated by Joseph H. Adams and comes with a dictionary of electrical terms. The text says a simple and inexpensive cell may be made from electric-light carbons, with the copper coating removed, and pencils of zinc that can be purchased for five cents each. The solution is made by dissolving four ounces of sal-ammoniac in a pint of water, and the jar should be filled three-fourths full.

For larger machinery, where more current is required, the text says the bluestone and the bi-chromate batteries will be found necessary. One figure represents a dynamo whose field-magnets are excited by a separate battery or generator, which is known as a “separately excited” machine. The text defines P-C as an abbreviation for porous cup and Pear Push as a push-button enclosed in a handle having the shape of a pear.
