About this book
An unexpected letter interrupts breakfast at Hanley Hall in Lancashire, bringing an old promise back into the Stafford family's life. Kate learns that her father once jokingly arranged her marriage to his former business partner's son. The arrival of Harry Hall gives this childhood agreement a more immediate meaning. Soon a boating accident puts Kate in danger, and a passing stranger's rescue brings another connection into the household.
T. J. Flanagan links courtship and family expectations with a detective inquiry built around a locket, newspaper advertisements and travel between cities. Harry Blount shares his findings with Carden, while Inspector Prime records information at Bow Street. Searches among diamond dealers and Blount's contacts among Hall's servants add to the investigation. Readers can follow the contrast between polite domestic conversation and the patient gathering of clues in this mystery novel.
