About this book
Influenza has confined Hercule Poirot to bed when Roger Havering arrives with urgent news: his wealthy uncle has been killed at a shooting lodge on the Derbyshire moors. Captain Hastings travels there in Poirot's place, promising to send full reports and follow instructions by telegram. At the isolated house, a visitor with a black beard, a locked gun-room door and the accounts of a wife and housekeeper give him plenty to investigate.
Agatha Christie's detective short story sets Hastings's eagerness beside Poirot's sharp comments from a distance. Inspector Japp considers train times and family finances, while a missing revolver turns up far from the lodge. The pleasure lies in comparing physical evidence with witness statements and watching which details each investigator considers important. It offers a compact example of a mystery built around observation, competing explanations and the working relationship between Poirot and his narrator.
