About this book
Heart of Man is a book by George Edward Woodberry. The preface says that the paper "Taormina" was published in the Century Magazine and that the other papers in the volume are new. The preface gives the author's intention as illustrating how poetry, politics, and religion are the flowering of the same human spirit.
The contents list includes, among others, Taormina, A New Defence of Poetry and Democracy. A description of ruins says, "Here Attic tragedies were once played, and Roman gladiators fought." A discussion of literature names the profound moods of the meditative spirit in grand works and the common moods of simple joy and sorrow in less serious works.
