About this book
The Red Man’s Rebuke is credited to Simon Pokagon, who is styled Pottawattamie Chief. A note from the author says his object in publishing the “Red Man’s Rebuke” on the bark of the white birch tree is loyalty to his own people and gratitude to the Great Spirit.
The text speaks on behalf of the American Indians and declares that they have no spirit to celebrate the Great Columbian Fair now being held in this Chicago city. A verse laments that “our day is o’er” and that the plow is on their hunting grounds. A quoted tribute calls a people loving, uncovetous and docile in all things. Historians are quoted as saying that the Spaniards most treacherously seized and bound in chains the unsuspecting natives.
