About this book

Heart's Desire is subtitled The Story of a Contented Town, Certain Peculiar Citizens, and Two Fortunate Lovers. A chapter titled The Land of Heart's Desire is described as being in part the story of Curly, the Can of Oysters, and the Girl from Kansas. The text says of a place named Heart's Desire that there was no rush nor hurry, no bickering nor envying, no crowding nor thieving there. The town is described as lying along one deliberate, crooked street, with buildings mostly of adobe, with earthen roofs.

Mr. Ellsworth says to Mr. Anderson that they are going to give him plenty of law business, that is to say, if he wants it and will take it. The text asks how the family from Kansas had happened to drift into Heart's Desire, and how Dan Anderson, a very good lawyer, happened to have tarried there. Curly is described as a trifle gaunt, giving his first attention to his horse.
