About this book

A Chance Acquaintance is credited to William Dean Howells. The contents list gives, among others, chapters called Up the Saguenay, Mrs. Ellison's Little Maneuvre and Mr. Arbuton Speaks. The chapter called Up the Saguenay has Miss Kitty Ellison sitting tranquilly expectant on the forward promenade of the Saguenay boat, advertised to leave Quebec at seven o'clock on Tuesday morning.

A man in a dashing Glengarry cap and a somewhat shabby gray suit takes on one arm a plain, jolly woman who seemed to be his wife. The three of them become intent upon a Liverpool steamer gliding up to her dock, and one speaker exclaims, Fancy her being from England! The chapter called Love's Young Dream speaks of two young people whose days now lapsed away together, and says Mrs. Ellison secured all possible knowledge of their slight adventure from Kitty.
