About this book
Her Majesty's Mails, by William Lewins, is a historical and descriptive account of the British Post-Office, together with an appendix. The historical account describes roads resembling broad ditches, worn by water and strewn with loose stones, with travellers having no choice but to ride on horseback or walk. The discussion of legal procedure says disputes formerly adjusted by courts of arbitration within the baronies of England were ordered to London, compelling country people to travel to the courts of Westminster.
Lord Canning recommended a plan for providing information on postal matters, believing that information could be given without inconvenience and might prevent many misapprehensions and possibly complaints. The explanation of Post-Office savings banks says nearly all money-order offices in the United Kingdom are open each working day to receive and pay savings-bank accounts.
