About this book
The History of the British Post Office is by J. C. Hemmeon, Ph.D., and was published in January 1912. Its footnotes are gathered at the back of the book, and the Appendix holds tables, one of them divided into a part for Scotland and a part for Ireland.
One passage describes the Foreign or Strangers' Post, a system of posts that foreign merchants in London set up at the opening of the sixteenth century, and the complaints English merchants made about it in a petition to the Privy Council. It mentions Sir Brian Tuke and his successors Sir John Mason and Mr. Paget as joint Postmasters-General, and the Proclamation of 1591 forbidding anyone but the Royal Posts to carry letters to and from foreign countries. Another passage works through the postage rates of 1660 and shows that, because posts ran through London, a letter from Bristol to Exeter travelled about 300 miles to reach a town eighty miles away and paid 6 d.
