About this book
W. H. St. John Hope's handbook on heraldry is addressed in its title to craftsmen and designers. It is a heavily illustrated book: the credits mention figures numbered up to 199 and plates up to XXXI, many of them photographed from casts of seals, brass rubbings and effigies, among them the effigies of the Duke and Duchess of Exeter.
One passage on supporters says that by the third quarter of the fourteenth century shields of arms with supporters and crested helms had become fully established, and that on seals the supporters usually form pairs and often hold up the helm and its crest. Every kind of creature is made to serve, and some supporters are composed of badges, such as falcons on crooked billets. The index lists arms, chains of office and collars, including a Norwich mayor's chain and a Newcastle sheriff's chain.
