About this book
The Flags of the World concerns the history, blazonry and associations of flags, including national, colonial and personal flags, imperial ensigns and symbols of lost causes. The account of banners with religious significance says they were often carried from monasteries to battlefields, with accompanying monks and priests invoking heavenly aid during the fighting.
The text records that Henry V. displayed his own arms at his field headquarters at Agincourt and gave special prominence to banners of the Trinity, St. George and St. Edward. A quoted rule for ship streamers requires a personal device in place of arms and places the streamer at the top of a ship or in the forecastle.
