About this book
Historical Characters, with the subtitle Mackintosh, Talleyrand, Canning, Cobbett, Peel, is credited to Henry Lytton Bulwer Dalling and Bulwer. The dedication to Lord Lytton says the writer wished to give some general idea of modern history, from the period of the French Revolution of 1789.
The text says M. Necker belonged to a class of men not uncommon in our own time, with abilities that, though good, were not of the first order. The text says M. Necker determined that the sole order of the tiers-état should have as many representatives as the two other orders conjointly. The text says Cobbett’s was one of those natures which never did things by halves.
