About this book
The old city hall has high-pitched roofs and dormer windows, with pinnacles, turrets and spires breaking up the skyline. The castle account places residences, a court chapel and a court prison within the precincts of a spacious, strongly fortified building. The island is described as surrounded by a lofty wall with four gateways, each protected by a portcullis and drawbridge.
The architectural discussion says the architects of Bruges seem never entirely to have abandoned the semicircular arch, whose presence does not necessarily indicate Romanesque origin. The account of the Hôtel de Ville describes a restored entrance hall and a great hall with an ancient timber roof and modern frescoes still unfinished.
